AUSIT Conference, Adelaide - Combining education with team work!
In November, 2009, the Vocal Harmony Works team made their way to Adelaide to work with a group of translators and interpreters from all over Australia.
PART 1 - Vocal Health Workshop
Our first session was a Vocal Health Workshop centred around effective and safe use of voice. This is clearly a crucial skill for any interpreter. Participants were educated on the anatomical structures responsible for voice production and then shown how to control and exercise some of these structures. The session included many interactive drills in which participants experimented with exercises and techniques.
PART 2 - Karaoke with a twist!
After a long day of lectures and workshops, the delegates met in the main hall for the most talked about item on the program... "Karaoke with a twist!". The VHW team had decided to do a little translating ourselves! With the assistance of Babel Fish Translator, we had converted well known songs from English into a foreign language and then back to English. The result was a hilarious set of lyrics that was difficult to recognise. The delegates were asked to guess the names of the song and then small groups were invited on stage to sing the songs while the audience joined in. We even had an enthusiastic AUSLAN translator perform for us! The session was a huge success creating a lively atmosphere and bringing smiling delegates together.
A vibrant AUSLAN translator
